Rome weather is usually characterized as Mediterranean, although the climate is actually a mixture of Mediterranean and Temperate. This is due to the fact that the city is 30km distant from the sea at Ostia, and that is close to the Apennines.

Rome's coast, which has the true Mediterranean climate, has a more consistent weather throughout the day and does not experience as large temperature fluctuations as Rome city does.  During winter, the weather along the coast is warmer and in summer it is usually cooler than inland.  As one moves closer to the Apennines, the larger can be the temperature fluctuation during winter.

Rome weather during summer is the hottest season in the city, as by August, the temperature during the day often exceeds 32 °C. The average high temperature in December is about 13 °C.  Rome’s weather during winter can be feel very cold, however subzero temperatures are very rare. Snow rarely falls in Rome, however when if it snow, it will occur in December, January and February.

Spring is a pleasant season in Rome, as the skies are usually clear and the weather is mild and stable.  The temperatures are more consistent and it almost never rains during spring time.

Rome weather during autumn is quite mild as well.  Until the middle of October the weather is still quite dry, and it’s usually only around the beginning to middle of November that the temperatures begin to drop and first rainfall occurs. The sky during autumn is normally sunny and cloudless.

The best time to visit Rome is considered to be the period between April and June, and additionally from mid-September to October.  During October in particular, the Roman ottobrate (beautiful October days), is known for its sunny and warm days.
